(Jefferson City - MO) Today the State Board of Education voted to retain Dr. Margie Vandeven as Commissioner of Education. Missouri National Education Association Pres. Charles E. Smith issued the following statement:

“The State Board of Education’s vote to retain Dr. Margie Vandeven should end the unnecessary chaos created by Gov. Greitens.  As educators, we are deeply committed to the success of every student. The revolving door of appointments has created uncertainty for our students and local schools; it’s time to restore order. Today’s vote should put an end to these efforts and allow the state board to focus on student success instead of political maneuvering.

We invite the governor to stop the political maneuvers and join teachers and educators in a serious discussion about what works and how we can move forward in the best interest of students.”

The 35,000-member MNEA represents teachers, education support professionals, college faculty, retired teachers and students studying to be teachers in school districts and on college campuses throughout the state. It is the Missouri affiliate of the 3.2 million-member NEA.
