Independence NEA member awarded $1,000 in Read to Achieve contest

Ashley Hink, a first-grade teacher at Little Blue Elementary in the Independence School District, received a  visit from MNEA Pres. Phil Murray and KCTV5 Meteorologist Erin Little Dec. 5. She received a check for $1,000.

Hink is the latest winner in Missouri NEA's Read to Achieve Contest. The contest, co-sponsored by KCTV5 and the Missouri and Kansas affiliates of the National Education Association, awards $1,000 to one teacher per month within the KCTV5 viewing area.

Share your story

Even though we are not at school supporting Missouri students, members continue to help every day during this crisis. MNEA wants to share your stories as we struggle through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

We are hearing about members who are continuing to care for their students by

  • volunteering at school district Grab & Go meal distribution centers and food drives
  • providing child care for essential medical staff
  • shopping for the elderly so they don’t have to leave the safety of their homes
